Man United told Kalvin Phillips will sweep aside 'silly' Leeds rivalry to complete transfer

Former Aston Villa striker Gabby Agbonlahor has stated he “100 per cent” believes that the rivalry between Leeds and Manchester United would not stop Kalvin Phillips from signing for the Red Devils.

The Yorkshire-born midfielder will not play again until at least February after undergoing surgery on a hamstring injury, but that hasn’t stopped the likes of Liverpool and United both registering interest.

Although a January switch is very unlikely, plenty of clubs will be enquiring about the 26-year-old in the summer, by which time he will have two years left on his contract at Leeds.

The Whites may be tempted to cash in for Phillips and should a new manager take the helm at Old Trafford, the England star would be a statement acquisition.

The animosity between United and Leeds is historic but Agbonlahor says it isn’t strong enough to deter Phillips from crossing the divide - something that will be music to the ears of Red Devils fans.

Speaking to Football Insider , the former Three Lions international said: “Phillips will go wherever is good for him and wherever is good for his career.

“Those rivalries are silly. I know Leeds and Man United have history but it’s not like it’s Leeds and Bradford or Aston Villa and Birmingham City.

“It’s not enough to stop him from playing Champions League football and playing at a big club like Manchester United.

“I’m 100 per cent sure he would still make that move if an offer is accepted. It’s not a rivalry that I think should stop a player from making the move.

“Eric Cantona did it, so I don’t think it will stop a player from moving.”

Leeds have felt Phillips’ absence having conceded 14 goals in the three league outings he’s missed so far, albeit all have been tough encounters against Chelsea, Manchester City and Arsenal.
