Man United step up chase for Tottenham target, Gedson Fernandes update - latest European rumours

The January transfer window is up and running and teams from across Europe are looking to make significant improvements to their respective squads.

Although it is a notoriously difficult time to get things done, with clubs reluctant to sell players, it can also prove a vital period for the clubs.

Plenty of Premier League clubs are in need of additions to strengthen their squads ahead of the run-in, with Tottenham among the clubs hoping to do business as they look to cover for the injured Harry Kane.

Here is the latest round-up of transfer news and gossip from across Europe.

Premier League transfer round-up: Gunners and Man Utd eye up Cavani

United pursuing Bruno Fernandes deal

Manchester United are edging ever close to landing the signing of Bruno Fernandes.

The Portuguese playmaker was heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford in the summer but a deal never materialised.

However, Portuguese news outlet DN claims that United will offer two players to sweeten any deal for Fernandes.

One of those is Argentina defender Marcos Rojo, who is out of favour at United.

Spurs to sign Fernandes

Jose Mourinho is moving closer to his first signing as Tottenham Hotspur boss.

Spurs are set to beat several European rivals to the signature of Gedson Fernandes from Benfica.

The Mirror claim that the club will announce the signing of the midfielder on an 18-month loan deal next week.

The 21-year-old can operate in attacking areas and could be viewed as a potential replacement for Christian Eriksen.

Van de Beek to Madrid

Manchester United will miss out on Ajax midfielder Donny van de Beek, who will join Real Madrid instead.

The Sunday Mirror report that a deal for the Dutchman to move to the Bernabeu is '80 per cent certain'.

Madrid have reportedly agreed to meet Ajax’s £46.8m valuation, despite the fact he could have been available for £20m last summer.

The 22-year-old is believed to have held talks about a move to Old Trafford previously.
