Manchester United have reportedly had a loan offer for Inter Milan midfielder Matias Vecino rejected.
The Red Devils are in need of reinforcements in the middle of the park after suffering injuries to Paul Pogba and Scott McTominay during the festive period.
There's just a week remaining of the January transfer window and it would appear that United are about to press ahead with attempts to bolster their squad ahead of deadline day.
However, it's unlikely that Vecino will be heading to the 'Theatre of Dreams' this month as Sky in Italy claim a bid to take the Uruguay international on loan for the remainder of the season has been turned down.
The report states that United couldn't reach an agreement with Inter on the conditions of the deal.
Furthermore, it's claimed the Vecino could be on the move to Serie A rivals Napoli in a swap deal that would see Allan make the move to the San Siro.
Man United's interest in Vecino could have something to do with their ongoing pursuit of Sporting CP's Bruno Fernandes.
Links to the Portugal international stretch all the way back to the summer and despite talk of a £55m bid, there's been little movement and the midfielder's agent poured doubt over a transfer this month.
"I don't know. If he doesn't leave now, he will leave for sure in the summer because Sporting have already spoken with other clubs," Jorge Mendes said. "Something will happen but I am not sure if now or at the end of the season."
Does United's reported loan offer for Vecino mean they have switched midfield targets?
If so, that could be great news for Tottenham Hotspur and Jose Mourinho.
Last summer Spurs came close to agreeing terms with Sporting for Fernandes but did not increase their original offer when it became clear Christian Eriksen was not going to move on.
However, the Denmark international is being linked with a move to Inter Milan this month which means the Lilywhites could be on the market for a replacement sooner rather than later and perhaps could take advantage of United's struggles regarding Fernandes.
Mourinho even joked about the idea of luring his compatriot to north London. Full story.
