Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo has been honoured at the Globe Soccer Awards in Dubai for breaking the men’s international goalscoring record earlier this year.
The Portugal legend overtook Iranian Ali Daei’s 115-goal feat in October after netting two late goals as his country beat the Republic of Ireland in World Cup Qualifying, with 2021 also seeing him surpass 800 senior career goals.
He has scored 13 times in 20 appearances for United so far this season.
Ronaldo is so often pitted against Lionel Messi when it comes to individual awards, with the United man beating his long-time rival on this occasion.
Despite being bestowed his seventh Ballon d’Or earlier in November, Messi had to step aside when PSG teammate Kylian Mbappe was named Men’s Best Player of the Year.
Robert Lewandowski picked up a double on the night, taking home the Fans’ Player of the Year and the Maradona Award for best goalscorer.
He equalled Ronaldo’s 2013 record of scoring 69 goals in a single calendar year in 2021.
Italy had several awards to celebrate with the national team being handed National Team of the Year on the back of their Euro 2020 success.
Meanwhile, Roberto Mancini was given coach of the year, Gianluigi Donnarumma was named Goalkeeper of the Year and Leonardo Bonucci won Best Defender of the Year.
Chelsea were voted the best club team thanks to last season’s Champions League triumph with Manchester City ’s Txiki Begiristain named Best Sporting Director of the Year.
Women’s Player of the Year was handed to Barcelona’s Alexia Putellas to go with her Ballon d’Or with her club winning Best Women’s Club of the Year.
