Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believes the club’s progress this season will convince Paul Pogba and Edinson Cavani to stay at Old Trafford.
United are on course to finish second in the Premier League, which would be their best performance since 2017/18, having closed the gap on champions-elect Manchester City after finishing a whopping 33 points behind last year’s title winners Liverpool.
Alongside their league form, United are all-but sure of a place in the Europa League final after thumping Roma 6-2 in the first leg of their semi-final tie on Thursday.
Pogba, who scored in that game, is due to enter the final 12 months of his contract this summer and had been heavily linked with a move until the recent run of form and fitness which has seen him become an integral part of Solskjaer’s team once more.
“He knows my feelings about him and that I want him to stay,” Solskjaer, whose side are second in the Premier League and in a good position to reach the Europa League final, told reporters.
“It’s about creating an environment that we thrive in... and a team that challenges for trophies.”
Cavani, meanwhile, only signed a one-year deal when joining as a free agent after leaving PSG last summer.
The contract includes the option of a one-year extension but the Uruguayan is yet to make a decision over his future.
“He (Pogba) and Edinson are winners but they’re also human and it’s important that they enjoy coming in and enjoy playing for this team,” Solskjaer said.
“If... they can feel our progress, our chances are probably bigger to keep them.”
