Man United performance highlights areas for Leeds United optimism ahead of next tough test

It proved to be another frustrating afternoon for Leeds United on Sunday, as they suffered a 4-2 defeat against arch rivals Manchester United at Elland Road.

Marcelo Bielsa's side began on the front foot but fell behind as Luke Shaw's cross was headed home by Harry Maguire, before Bruno Fernandes doubled the Red Devils' advantage on the stroke of half-time.

However, the Whites didn't give up and pulled one back through Rodrigo's cross-cum-shot, which began to galvanise the home supporters.

Moments later, the comeback was complete as Raphinha tapped home from Daniel James' cross for his ninth Premier League goal of the season.

Just as the Whites were pushing to take the lead, they were caught on the counter-attack when Jadon Sancho's pass found Fred, who fired the ball home from close range.

Anthony Elanga added a fourth for the Red Devils which condemned Leeds to a third defeat in four matches and the defeat leaves them in 15th, five points above the relegation zone.

There were plenty of positives to take, though, considering how the Whites started the game and responded after the break.

Joe Gelhardt and Raphinha seemed to give Bielsa's men a lift and they were both influential in the comeback and a determined second-half performance.

In actual fact, Leeds recorded more shots than their opponents over the course of the 90 minutes (16-15).

Although Ralf Rangnick's side had three more efforts on target (9-6), the Whites created more chances (14-12) and were unfortunate not to score a third when David de Gea kept out Gelhardt's 61st-minute strike.

Adam Forshaw's return to the starting XI was also important and he helped to dictate the game in midfield, with Leeds edging the possession stat (54%-46%).

Leeds registered more successful passes (314-246) and began to look back to their best at times with the free-flowing, attacking football on show.

James and Jack Harrison provided the width in the first-half and the duo isolated Shaw and Aaron-Bissaka but were unable to punish the Red Devils when they had the opportunity to cross in the final third.

Out of possession, Leeds were also impressive and showed that fighting spirit in tough conditions, making 72 recoveries, 15 interceptions and winning 14 tackles.

Luke Ayling was integral to that and he set the tempo with some strong challenges, matching the intensity of the Whites faithful who were terrific on the day.

Although the Red Devils were clinical in the final third and conjured up more big chances, Leeds should take many positives from the performance into what is a big week ahead.

They travel to second-placed Liverpool on Wednesday, before hosting Tottenham Hotspur next weekend.
