Man United make transfer decision that could be bad news for Arsenal after Mikel Arteta hint

Transfer rumours are beginning to heat up with deadline day fast approaching.

Arsenal have been one of the busier clubs in the January window, bringing in Omar Rekik on a permanent transfer, whilst also bolstering their first-team squad with loan deals for Mat Ryan and Martin Odegaard.

Furthermore, as many as five players have departed the Emirates Stadium either on loan or permanently - including William Saliba, Mesut Ozil, Sokratis, and Sead Kolasinac.

As the window closes on Monday, there's still time for technical director Edu to complete one final transfer mission to complete Mikel Arteta's squad for the second half of the season.

With the Gunners still in the market for at least one more addition, they could be affected by Manchester United's transfer plans ahead of deadline.

Defender Brandon Williams expects to stay at Old Trafford beyond Monday's transfer deadline.

Despite interest from Newcastle and Southampton, the MEN understands United want to keep full-back Williams as cover following the departures of right-backs Timothy Fosu-Mensah and Ethan Laird.

This stance could be bad news for Arsenal and Mikel Arteta.

As Williams, who can play as a full-back on both sides, had been linked with a move to Southampton, he could have been viewed as a potential replacement for Ryan Bertrand who is reportedly a target for the Gunners.

The left-back is out of contract at St Mary's at the end of the season and the Evening Standard have reported that Arsenal are monitoring his situation along with other targets.

This rumour emerged after Arteta hinted at wanting to bring in cover for Kieran Tierney.

"With the departure of Kola we’re a little bit short with a left-footed full-back at the moment," Arteta said last week. "We can use Ainsley there, we can use Bukayo there, we can use Cedric who’s played in that position.

"We have some options. But a natural option to Kieran obviously we don’t, but we can adapt.

"We will be looking to see what is available."

With that said, judging by Bertrand's comments from earlier in the month, it would appear that he's planning to stay at St Mary's for a while yet.

"I want to stay at the club. I want to be part of this and to keep going and to keep developing," he said when speaking to BBC Radio Solent. "I want to see how far we can go. We can do some great things. "I love being here. I have grown on the field, off the field and I’ve learned a lot of things.

"We're now at a stage where we were during my first three years here. There was a bit of turbulence but now we’ve got it back.

"The seatbelts are fully fastened now, let's see how far we go."
