Man United legend Norman Whiteside forced to sell off his medals to top up pension

Former record-breaking footballer Norman Whiteside is selling his medals and memorabilia for £140,000 to top up his pension.

The ex-Manchester United and Northern Ireland star said his 'small pension' from his footballing career has led him to sell his medals, caps and shirts.

Whiteside made his debut for Man Utd aged just 16 and in 1982 he broke Pele's record of becoming the youngest player to appear in a World Cup aged 17 years and 41 days.

The attacking-midfielder was also United's youngest ever captain, aged 20.

But the 55-year-old's career only lasted nine years before he retired through injury.

The star lot in the auction is his FA Cup winner's medal from the 1985 final in which he scored the winning goal against Everton.

It is valued at £15,000. Reflecting on his career, from its humble beginnings, Whiteside said: "My mum and dad were very proud of what I did, but they were quite modest.

“Football is as popular as it is because it a working class game. The best Christmas present you could get was a football or a pair of boots.”

The sale takes place on July 29.
