Man United fans urge Ed Woodward to make Arsene Wenger decision after Sir Alex Ferguson comments

Sir Alex Ferguson paid tribute to Arsene Wenger after the former Arsenal manager was honoured at a charity dinner night.

The former Manchester United manager praised his old adversary on Monday night as Wenger was named a 'Legend of Football' at the annual Nordoff Robbins award night.

Wenger enjoyed a fierce rivalry with Ferguson for two decades, with Arsenal and United often going toe-to-toe for honours in England's top-flight.

Although the pair clashed in the past, Ferguson, who himself has been a past recipient of the 'Legends of Football' award, opened up on how he enjoyed the competition provided by the 69-year-old.

He said: "The career you had as a manager at Arsenal was absolutely fantastic - an absolute legend.

"I loved the competition against you. We had some great times and it's wonderful you're getting this award tonight.

"So good luck, my blessing with you."

On social media, United fans responded to Ferguson's comments with many agreeing with their former manager, and some believing that Wenger could be the perfect candidate to replace the under-pressure Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

United's 1-0 defeat to Newcastle on Sunday was the latest in a series of poor results and performances, and Solskjaer is reportedly already fighting to save his job.

The Old Trafford side face Liverpool after the international break, and a heavy defeat could spell the end of the Norwegian's spell at United.

And some fans took to Twitter to urge club chief Ed Woodward to hire Wenger to turn their season around.
