However, the Gunners could not take advantage and gifted Bruno Fernandes and Cristiano Ronaldo goals either side of half-time by losing possession in dangerous ares.
And despite Martin Odegaard's equaliser, the Norway international then needlessly gave away a penalty with 20 minutes to go and his former Real Madrid teammate made no mistake from the spot to ensure United secured all three points.
Whilst Arsenal and Mikel Arteta must turn their attentions to Monday night's clash against Everton at Goodison Park, some Man United fans aren't done talking about events on Thursday night.
Particularly two incidents, one in each half.
In a moment that Benjamin White will want to forget in a hurry, United supporters have taken real joy out of seeing the £50million defender on the floor as Ronaldo raced clear.
Not content with humiliating one Arsenal player, the Portugal superstar did the same to Thomas Partey in the second half as he left the midfielder on the ground before seeing an effort saved by Aaron Ramsdale.
Whilst the two pieces of skill didn't lead to a goal, it did bring about a massive reaction on social media.
