Manchester United fans have launched their defence of Scott McTominay as Scotland lost 2-0 to the Czech Republic at Euro 2020.
McTominay was born in Lancaster, England but the United midfielder represents Scotland on the international stage and he made Steve Clarke's starting XI for Scotland's opening game of the European Championship against the Czech Republic on Monday.
Despite having the home advantage of playing at Hampden Park, Scotland suffered defeat and McTominay's performance was immediately scrutinised on social media, with his display garnering mixed reviews from some supporters.
The majority of United fans were quick to defend McTominay, though, making an argument that the 24-year-old didn't deserve any criticism for the result, with some stating he wasn't used in a way - having played in defensive midfield - that played to his strengths.
Which role do you think suits McTominay's strengths? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
It seems United supporters believe McTominay offers more when allowed to roam forward as a box-to-box midfielder, something he was denied the chance to do against the Czech Republic, instead tasked with protecting his nation's defence.
