Man United fans fume after Ander Herrera congratulates Leeds United on Premier League promotion

Ander Herrera has congratulated Leeds United on their promotion to the Premier League - and it's divided opinion with fans of the red half of Manchester.

The Whites had their place back in the top flight confirmed yesterday evening despite not being in action, when Yorkshire rivals Huddersfield Town beat West Bromwich Albion 2-1 at the John Smith's Stadium.

The defeat for the Baggies confirmed Leeds' promotion back to the Premier League, 16 years after the Elland Road club were relegated from the top flight.

Leeds' place back in the Premier League under Marcelo Bielsa has been greeted with congratulations from across the football world.

And some have come from sources you might not expect at first glance.

Joe Mewis and Beren Cross celebrate Leeds United's promotion to the Premier League

Marcus Rashford, striker for Leeds' fierce rivals Manchester United, initially put out a tweet congratulating the Whites on their promotion.

The tweet read: "As a United fan I'm happy to see Leeds United back in the Premier League where they belong @LUFC"

But the England international later deleted the tweet after receiving somewhat of a backlash, accumulating more replies than likes and retweets combined.

One player who also has ties with United and Leeds, to an extent, is midfielder Herrera.

The Spaniard played for the Old Trafford club for five years before leaving last summer to join Paris Saint-Germain.

Herrera played under Bielsa when the Argentine managed Athletic Bilbao betwen 2011 and 2013 and he took to Twitter to congratulate his former manager.

And the opinion among United fans seemed to be split when responding to Herrera's tweet.

Mikey Loveridge posted: "Honest? He admitted to spying on opposition training sessions to gain an advantage."

Another United fan posted: "Thank you for leaving."

Syed Ahnaf Morshed posted: "Bielsa was his coach. He congratulated the coach not the club! Fair game I guess!"

Another fan posted: "We are glad they‘re back too, we just don‘t want to congratulate them."

Gary Lynch posted: "Big Utd man alright - enjoy the bench/money."

Another fan added: "Please don’t associate yourself with Manchester United, thank you."

Another fan added: "He was your gaffer at Bilbao, it's cool."
