Man United defender ruled out of 2026 World Cup

  • Manchester United defender Matthijs de Ligt has undergone back surgery to finally resolve a persistent issue that has kept him sidelined for six months.
  • The corrective procedure means the 26-year-old's current season is over, and he will also miss the upcoming World Cup with the Netherlands.
  • De Ligt, who joined United in August 2024, has been limited to just 14 appearances this term, having not featured since a 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace in late November.
  • Manchester United confirmed that the Netherlands international is expected to return for the club in the early stages of the 2026-27 season.
  • De Ligt expressed his disappointment at not being able to help his team or represent his country, but stated he is looking forward to doing everything to get back to full fitness.
