Man United and Newcastle lesson Liverpool must learn and why next Man City clash vital

Liverpool opened up an eight-point gap at the top of the Premier League table when they beat Manchester City at Anfield earlier this month.

After 12 games and heading into the third international break of the season the Reds found themselves nine clear of the defending champions.

Positively only two teams have ever been so far ahead at such an early stage - Manchester United in 1993/94 when they lead by nine at this point and City in 2017/18 who were also eight points clear after a dozen matches - and both sides won the league title that season.

Blood Red: Jurgen Klopp asked what is biggest threat to Liverpool’s title challenge

However, there have also been two occasions when teams with at least an eight-point lead were overtaken.

Firstly, City chased down such a lead in 2011/12 when Manchester United were eight clear of Roberto Mancini's side after 32 games.

United had amassed 79 points while City lay in second on 71, only for the latter to turn the tables and chase their rivals down over the final six games and win the title in stoppage time against Queens Park Rangers on the last day.

Back in January 1996, after 23 matches Newcastle United looked almost home and dry in top spot with 54 points - leading both Liverpool and Manchester United by 12 points who sat in second and third respectively.

Unbelievably, the Magpies' season began to unravel and Manchester United claimed the title and finished four points clear.

While Liverpool have managed to create a commanding lead in the Premier League, history shows such advantages can be eliminated.

In both of those Premier League comebacks too, the chasing team won the second match with their title rivals in the run-in.

Newcastle lost 1-0 at home to Man United on March 4 1996 while Man United lost 1-0 to Man City on April 30 2012.

It will no doubt then be vital for the Reds when they go to the Etihad on April 4 to make sure they get a result against City, with Pep Guardiola's men looking set to both chase and fight tooth and nail for the crown this term.
