The man came around shortly before the North West Ambulance Service arrived and they took him to the Liverpool Royal Hospital for observation.

His injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

The road has been closed in both directions since police arrived at the scene so they can carry out investigative work.

The road is expected to be reopened by Merseyside Police within the next hour.

Travel site INTRIX said traffic is slow due to the closure.
