Man tries to snatch toddler in 'horrible' attempted abduction at seaside town

A man allegedly tried to snatch a toddler in a seaside town yesterday.

Police have started an investigation into the incident, which happened in Weston-super-Mare, Somerset.

Fortunately, the man didn't take the child - believed to be a boy.

"We are investigating an incident in which a man allegedly took hold of a toddler in Weston-super-Mare," said a spokesman for Avon and Somerset Police .

"We are currently carrying out enquiries to establish what happened.

"Officers are patrolling the area to provide reassurance and receive any information on the incident in order to piece together what happened.

"If you are able to help, please contact us, quoting reference 5219114866."

Officers in the popular seaside town have reassured residents who have expressed their concern online.

Writing comments under a police statement on Facebook to appeal for witnesses, one shocked resident said: "It's horrible."

Another wrote: "I can't believe it."

It is unclear how exactly old the youngster was.

The investigation continues.
