Man 'tried to throw punches at paramedic' after collapsing in street

A man who collapsed in the middle of Clayton Square lashed out at paramedics and passers-by as they tried to help.

The man was seen to fall over and lose consciousness in the middle of the busy square at around 6.30pm on Saturday, January 21. He then regained consciousness and became aggressive, but was unable to stand.

Paramedics attended the scene at around 6.40pm after being contacted by worried members of the public, and tried to calm the man down. However, he then grabbed one of the emergency workers and "tried to throw punches towards him".

Merseyside Police confirmed that a 40-year-old man was arrested over the incident.

A Merseyside Police spokesman said: "We were contacted by the North West Ambulance Service at 6.45pm on Saturday, January 21 to reports that a male being treated on Clayton Square in Liverpool city centre was causing a disturbance.

"The male is then reported to have walked away, grabbed an emergency worker and tried to throw punches towards him. There is no suggestion anyone was injured during the incident.

"A 40 year-old man was later arrested on suspicion of assaulting an emergency service worker. He has been released on conditional bail."

A North West Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “On Saturday, an ambulance crew working for one of our third-party providers attended to a patient in Liverpool city centre; he became aggressive and assaulted one of the crew.

“Violence and aggression against any emergency responder is abhorrent and is unacceptable. We understand police have taken action, and we support any prosecution.”
