Man tried to smuggle weed and addiction meds to prison lag pal, who was serving time for drug dealing... it didn't go well

A man was caught red-handed trying to smuggle cannabis and addiction medication to a lag in prison - who was serving time for drug dealing.

Richard Whitehurst has been jailed after attempting trying to get the substances into HMP Forest Bank in Salford.

The 28-year-old, from Tameside, said he was doing a favour for a friend.

Judge Patrick Field QC told him: "People must be clear that taking contraband into prison will not be tolerated."

Manchester Crown Court heard that Whitehurst was with another man and a child when they visited Forest Bank on December 17, 2017.

They went into the visiting room at about 3.10pm and sat opposite Jonathan Cole, 30, who was serving a six year jail sentence for possession with intent to supply class A drugs.

Prison staff were alerted to Cole, who was 'sat awkwardly', prosecutor Simon Barrett said.

They checked CCTV footage and saw Whitehurst removed an item from his clothing, and throw to the floor near Cole's feet.

He then put it into his prison bib, the court heard.

Staff restrained Cole and the package was recovered.

It contained 10 tabs of buprenorphine, a class C drug also known as Subutex, and 43g of class B drug cannabis.

After being arrested, Whitehurst replied 'no comment' to all questions asked by police.

The court heard Whitehurst has nine previous convictions for 15 offences, but none related to drugs.

His last conviction was for domestic violence and criminal damage six years ago.

Defending, Adam Watkins said Whitehurst has since made better life choices.

He is in a long term relationship, has a job and wants to better himself, the barrister said.

Whitehurst was asked to do a favour for a friend, and with an element of 'sympathy' or 'peer pressure', he accepted, Mr Watkins said.

"He should never have agreed to go along with it," Mr Watkins said.

Judge Field sent Whitehurst down for 20 weeks.

Passing sentence, the judge told Whitehurst: "There is no suggestion you were acting under pressure or coercion to take this items into prison.

"You accept you were doing a favour for a friend who was a serving prisoner.

"It was an unwise decision to do that favour for Mr Cole, and that one that will have consequences for you.

"Importing items into prison has a major impact upon prison discipline and good order within the prison," the judge said (Manchester Evening News)

"Drugs are items of considerable value within the prison estate.

"They can thus invest great power and enrichment to ruthless prisoners.

"They are a well known evil within prisons and a significant problem to prison staff."
