Man travelled from the Midlands to west Wales just to sleep in his car

A West Midlands man who drove to Pembrokeshire to "sleep in his car" has been fined for breaching coronavirus restrictions.

Kosta Papa, from Oldbury, near Birmingham, was ordered to pay more than £800 at Carmarthenshire Magistrates' Court in Llanelli on Thursday, November 12, after breaking lockdown rules.

The incident took place in June when the 31-year-old travelled from his home to the west Wales village of Stackpole.

He told officers from Dyfed-Powys Police that he had made the journey "to sleep" in his car.

The defendant was ordered to pay a total of £811, which consisted of a £660 fine, £85 in costs and a £66 victim surcharge.

A man from Carmarthen was also ordered to pay more than £800 for travelling to Pembrokeshire to walk his dog in May.

Other breaches of the rules included a man from Shropshire who travelled to Powys to buy a horse, a Telford man who made the journey to Powys to visit a waterfall and a man who travelled from the West Midlands to Powys to visit a lake.

Each incident took place between May and June this year, with each defendant being caught by Dyfed-Powys Police.

The defendants who were ordered to pay £811 included:-

  • A 41-year-old woman from the West Midlands who travelled to Pistyll Rhaeadr waterfall, in Powys, to walk her dog
  • A 53-year-old man from Shropshire who said he made travelled "to buy a horse" when stopped on the B4393 in Powys
  • A Telford man, 35, who told police he had travelled to "visit the waterfall" when they stopped him in Powys
  • A 31-year-old man from Birmingham who wanted "to go to the beach" in New Quay in Ceredigion
  • A 34-year-old man who travelled from Worcester to "price up a job in Aberdare" and then decided to travel to the beach in Borth, Ceredigion
  • A Wrexham woman, aged 48, who travelled to Lake Vyrnwy reservoir
  • A Newport man, aged 27, who told police he had made the journey to Tenby "to go to the beach"
  • A 33-year-old man, from Shropshire, who made the journey to Powys "to buy a horse".

Two defendants who were ordered to pay £239 included:-

  • A man from Surrey, aged 34, who travelled to Saundersfoot to go cockle picking
  • A 29-year-old man who told police he had made the journey from Swansea to Tenby "to have a look around".

This consisted of a £120 fine, £85 in costs and a £34 victim surcharge.
