Man trapped in ditch after getting stuck trying to save dog

A dogwalker had to be rescued after becoming trapped in a woodland ditch after an attempt to rescue their dog.

Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service said they were alerted to a dog walker in difficulty in Sniggery Wood, Little Crosby on Friday afternoon (September 17).

The emergency service said they received a call at 10.56am and minutes later, two fire engines and a search and rescue team were on scene.

On arrival, firefighters found the dogwalker trapped in the ditch surrounded by woodland.

It's believed the pet owner had gone into the ditch in a desperate attempt to rescue their dog which had somehow become trapped and got stuck themselves.

Ladders were used to bring both the dog and its owner out of the ditch unharmed.

A spokesperson for Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service said: "A dog and its owner were rescued from a ditch by firefighters after getting into difficulty.

"Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service was called to Sniggery Wood, Little Crosby, on Friday, September 17.

"Crews were alerted at 10.56am and on scene at 11.04am.

"Two fire engines attended as well as the search and rescue team.

"On arrival crews found person trapped in a ditch within the woodland.

It is believed they had gone into the ditch to rescue their dog, which had become trapped.

"Both the dog and its owner were rescued from the ditch using a ladder. Both were unharmed.

"Crews left the scene at 12.05pm."
