Man transforms staircase into epic wine cellar that can hold over 150 bottles

Have you ever looked at your stairs and thought there was just something missing from them, but you couldn't quite work out what it was?

Well, we have the answer for you.

It's a wine cellar.

Yes, really.

One lucky family are now the proud owners of a 156-bottle wine cellar, neatly tucked away inside their stairs and it's all thanks to Australian builder, Murray Berrill.

Murray created the epic wine cellar in just over a week and shared several snaps of his handiwork on Facebook.

Alongside the pictures, he said: "Ok, here's one for the wine lovers. What to do with dead space under the stairs? Create an easy access wine cellar. Proud of this one."

Murray, who lives in Bendigo, specialises in restoring heritage homes and garnered a lot of attention for the quirky build.

His post went viral, with hundreds of people liking and sharing it.

Hundreds also took the time to comment and share their thoughts on the wine cellar.

One wrote: "That's amazing, beautiful craftsmanship Murray."

Another replied: "Looks great, so clever."

"I'll drink to that idea," joked a third.

Someone else said: "OMG we need to redo our stairs."

A fourth added: "That is the best idea I have ever heard of."

Speaking to MailOnline, the 58-year-old  builder explained that the cellar is well insulated and has a thermometer installed to measure temperature.

He added: "I hate dead space when renovating a house, as you're essentially paying for nothing. So we thought of putting the wine in drawers in the staircase rather than behind it.

"The drawers are a wide width and are very strong - we spent around $500 (£250) at Bunnings just on the heavy duty drawer slides alone.

"We had to work out how all the bottles were going to fit and make sure the entire design was strong enough."
