Man tragically dies in hospital after being hit by a train in Northumberland

A man has tragically died in hospital after being hit by a train in Northumberland.

Emergency services were called to reports of a casualty on the tracks at around 3pm on Friday (January 7).

Rail services between Newcastle and Berwick were brought to a standstill with the East Coast Mainline blocked.

The Great North Air Ambulance was dispatched to the scene and the man was flown to the RVI in Newcastle for further treatment.

Now, British Transport Police have confirmed the casualty has died in hospital of his injuries.

His death is not being treated as suspicious, police added.

A spokeswoman for the force said: "Officers were called to Morpeth railway station at 3.02pm on Friday 7 January following reports of a casualty on the tracks.

"Paramedics also attended and a man was taken to hospital where he sadly later passed away.

"The incident is not being treated as suspicious."
