Man took cocktail of booze and mum's medication before crime spree in Darlington

A man went on a crime spree after taking a cocktail of booze and his mum's medication - and woke up in a police cell with no recollection of how he got there.

Daniel Frank Williams admitted one count of attempted burglary and three counts of vehicle interference following a string of offences which took place in Darlington on April 25, 2020.

Magistrates heard that Williams had taken his mother's medication topped with a "significant amount of alcohol" and had no recollection as to how he ended up in a police cell following the short-lived crime spree, with his defence stressing Williams is not a "one man crime wave".

He was, however, captured on CCTV attempting to open three car doors and a garage door in Darlington, reports TeessideLive.

The 25-year-old had first appeared at Newton Aycliffe Magistrates Court over a month ago where he also pleaded guilty to eight other offences - two counts of theft from a motor vehicle, four counts of vehicle interference, one attempted theft and one other theft - which also took place on April 25.

Neither the Crown Prosecution Service nor William's defence could shed light on why the four additional charges had not been dealt with at the time of the original hearing on June 21.

Joanne Hesse, prosecuting, outlined that the most recent four charges related to the garage and three vehicles owned by the same victim, which Williams had tried and failed to open.

She read a short victim impact statement which said: "As a result of this incident we regret moving to the area and we don't feel safe. We are now planning to move."

The court heard that Williams, who is a part-time carer for his mum, had been struggling with low mood due to the impact of lockdown and other factors.

In mitigation, Stephen Andrews, said: "He was suffering with a really severe headache and rather foolishly he took some of his mam's medication which was not prescribed for him.

"He then goes home and because of his low mood he sits at home and parks a significant amount of alcohol on top of someone else's medication. He then wakes up in a police cell."

Mr Andrews said Williams had no recollection or memory as to how he found himself to be in the police cell but when shown the CCTV footage and videos from Ring doorbells he admitted it was him in the footage.

"He's not essentially a one man crime wave, he's not a career criminal," added Mr Andrews.

Williams, of Eggleston View, was sentenced by a District Judge on June 21 and given a 12-week curfew and ordered to pay £85 costs, victim surcharge and £30 compensation.

Magistrates chose to extend Williams' curfew by two further weeks but added no additional financial penalty.
