Man told residents he broke into their Nottingham house because he was hungry

A man who told residents he had broken into their house because he was hungry has been sent to prison.

Mugaleta Tewelde, formerly of no fixed abode, was detained by two men living in the property, in Alfreton Road, Radford, after they caught him stealing food at around 10pm on April 9.

The 28-year-old man had broken in through a first-floor window.

Tewelde was sent to prison for eight months.

Officers arrived and arrested Tewelde who was charged with burglary and theft. He pleaded guilty to the offences the following day (April 10) and was sentenced on Wednesday, July 15, at Nottingham Crown Court.

Detective Constable Ruth Towle said: "Clearly we can't condone breaking and entering.

"It was very distressing for the victims to find an intruder in their home but they acted bravely and even told Tewelde that if he needed help for food he should have just knocked on the door.

"I hope Tewelde will now be able to reflect on his actions and access the help he needs."
