Man told police near Asda 'you may as well fine me' after refusing to go home

A man was fined £160 after did not return to his home address when asked by police during the pandemic.

Nottingham Magistrates' Court heard the incident started when a police officer was on duty in the Asda area, in Radford Road, Hyson Green, on January 14.

Adam Welch, 35, of Alfreton Road, Nottingham, was seen by the officer standing outside the superstore with others.

They were asked to leave, Welch denied he was part of the group that was requested to leave. He left but returned a short time later. He told the officer: "You may as well fine me as I will be back down here in 20 minutes."

He said "this coronavirus is a 'load of ****", and he wasn't wearing a face covering, Nottingham Magistrates' Court heard.

Welch pleaded guilty to contravening a requirement to return to his home address when he was asked by a police officer. The offence was on January 14 this year.

Welch was fined £160, ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £34 and costs of £85.

His lawyer told the court: "He accepts he was behaving in an entirely unreasonable manner on that day."

He does understand the seriousness of the virus, she added.
