Man told court he 'wants to explain' why he slashed defenceless teen in face with bottle

A man told a court he "wants to explain" why he slashed a defenceless teen in the face with a bottle.

Dylan Hughes, 34, lashed out at Craig Drake, 19, in a "completely unprovoked assault" at Fitzgerald's Irish Bar on Slater Street, Liverpool, at around 3:30am on Monday, March 20, reports Liverpool Echo.

Hughes from Conway Street in Everton, today, April 25, appeared before Liverpool Crown Court.

Appearing via video link to HMP Liverpool this morning, Hughes confirmed his name before pleading guilty to one count of wounding with intent against the complainant. He will now be sentenced next month on May 9 and remanded in custody.

Paul Blasbery, prosecuting, told the court that he has previous convictions for "minor violence, but nothing similar in nature"..

Charles Lander, defending, meanwhile added: "He was attacked previously and wants to explain why he reacted how he did."

Judge Neil Flewitt KC said: "It is inevitable there will be an immediate prison sentence. How long that will be will be dependent on the information available to the judge on the next occasion."

Merseyside cops had previously issued a CCTV appeal over the attack, which left the teen with a serious facial injury.

The force said at this point that his assailant had used an "unknown implement, believed to have been a bottle".

Detective Constable Dave Gaskell said of the incident: "This was a completely unprovoked assault on a man who was at a bar with his girlfriend. He received serious injuries which may require lengthy treatment, in addition to the psychological impact that such a serious assault has."
