Man to stand trial over Summernats death

Organisers said an event-based ambulance responded after the man was hurt.

A driver charged after a man fell from the back of a ute and died at the Summernats car festival has been committed to stand trial.

Luke Newsome, 30, from Emerald in Queensland is the first person to have been killed at the car show in its 29-year history.

He was riding in the flat tray of the vehicle that was cruising through the festival at Exhibition Park in Canberra in January when he fell.

He was taken to Canberra Hospital, but later died from his injuries.

After the incident, all entrants to the festival were sent a text message from Summernats officials, banning people from riding on the back of flat tray vehicles at the event.

Queensland man Alister Peter Spong, 33,appeared briefly in the ACT Magistrates Court where he was committed to stand trial, charged with culpable driving causing death.

The case will return to court on July 20.
