A man accused of murder over an alleged stabbing death at Lake Macquarie has been committed to stand trial in the Supreme Court.

Paul Russell Newburn, 32, pleaded not guilty to one count of murder when he faced Newcastle Local Court on Wednesday.

Mr Newburn allegedly fatally stabbed Glen Smith, 35, with a homemade spear at Bolton Point on the night of January 20 this year.

He was arrested at Belmont McDonalds after a manhunt involving Lake Macquarie police and the State Crime Command.

Mr Smith was allegedly stabbed when he and his fiancee went to a home to help a woman collect her personal belongings following an argument.

Mr Newburn did not lodge any plea for one count of manslaughter on Wednesday, which the court heard had been levelled at him as a back-up charge.

Magistrate Peter Barnett adjourned the matter to November 1, when Mr Newburn will be arraigned to stand trial in the Supreme Court.
