Man to stand trial for Vic freeway murder

Aaron Ong has pleaded not guilty to murdering fruiterer Paul Virgona on a freeway in November 2019. (AAP)

A man is set to stand trial accused of helping murder fruiterer Paul Virgona, gunned down on a Melbourne freeway.

Aaron Ong, 35, has pleaded not guilty to murdering the 46-year-old father of two as he drove on the EastLink at Donvale in November 2019.

Ong's co-accused, 30-year-old Josh Rider, is yet to enter a plea.

Prosecutors said the Mongols bikies waited outside Mr Virgona's home and followed him on his way to work, before firing 11 times at his car.

DNA from a half-eaten KitKat and clothes dumped at a park after Ong and Rider fled helped identify them, Melbourne Magistrates Court was told.

Ong pleaded not guilty on Thursday to murder. He is due to appear in Victoria's Supreme Court on April 7 for a directions hearing.

A hearing to determine whether there's enough evidence for Rider to stand trial is due to continue before a magistrate on March 29.
