Man to be quizzed by cops after 'prescription drugs passed to prisoner' during Styal visit

A man is to be questioned by police after prescription medication was allegedly passed to a prisoner during a visit. It happened at HMP Styal in Cheshire yesterday (Tuesday).

Officers were called to the female-only prison near Wilmslow shortly after 2.30pm in the afternoon. A 66-year-old man had 'passed a small quantity of prescribed medication to a prisoner while visiting' Cheshire Police said.

The man was searched and no further substances were found, the force said. A suspect will now attend a voluntary interview at a later date where he will be questioned under caution in connection with the incident, they added.

In a statement, Cheshire Police said: "At 2.40pm on Tuesday 1 November, Police were called to reports of an incident at Styal Prison, near Wilmslow.

"Officers attended the scene and a 66-year-old man had passed a small quantity of prescribed medication to a prisoner while visiting. The man was searched by officers and no further substances were found.

"An appointment has since been made for the man to voluntarily attend a police station at a future date where he will be questioned under police caution."

The Ministry of Justice said they could not comment as there was an ongoing investigation. However a source pointed out tougher 'airport-style' security has been rolled out across the prison estate in England and Wales and that new X-ray scanners have intercepted almost 20,000 smuggling plots.
