Man fined for spitting after Hayne sentencing

The man who spat on the ground near the victim of Jarryd Hayne as she left court after the disgraced former NRL star was jailed last week has been fined, police say.

Ugly scenes broke out in front of Newcastle courthouse on Thursday afternoon after Hayne was sentenced to a maximum of five years and nine months in jail for raping a woman in the Hunter in 2018.

A group of the former NSW Blues star's supporters got physical with media photographers and camera operators outside the courthouse after District Court Judge Helen Syme handed down the sentence.

It came after a man allegedly verbally abused the prosecution team - including the woman Hayne was convicted of assaulting - as they left the court precinct.

After reviewing footage, police said on Tuesday officers had spoken to the 38-year-old and issued him a fine for offensive conduct in relation to spitting.

Hayne has lodged a notice of intention to appeal the verdict and sentence.

It came after a Sydney District Court jury found him guilty in March of two counts of sexual intercourse without consent against a 26-year-old on NRL grand final night in 2018. The woman did not consent to a sexual encounter - in which Hayne used his mouth and finger - and the attack left her with bleeding genitals.

According to his parole period, Hayne's earliest possible release is January, 2025.
