A man will appear in court today charged in connection with a tragic Mayo assault which left another man dead on Monday night.
The body of 24-year-old Michael McDonagh was found at around 11pm on Monday following reports of a disturbance at a home in Swinford, Co. Mayo.
His body remained at the scene on Tuesday while Gardai conducted a technical examination of the scene at a Carrabeg Estate.
The victim, a member of a family of settled travellers from Knock, occasionally stayed at the house in Carrabeg Estate in Swinford, Co Mayo.
The Garda investigation is being led by Supt Joe McKenna of the Major Crime Unit in Mayo and gardai carried out house to house enquiries on Monday and viewed CCTV footage.
A post mortem exam was carried out on the body of the victim by Acting Deputy State Pathologist, Dr. Kathleen Han Suyin at Mayo University Hospital in Castlebar.
Gardai arrested a man in his 30s at the scene and he was yesterday being quizzed by detectives at Castlebar Garda Station after his period of detention was extended.
He will appear before Castlebar District Court this morning at 10.30am.
