Man threatens to throw himself into freezing river to escape police following dramatic chase through Tameside

A man threatened to jump into an icy river to escape police following a dramatic chase through Tameside.

Officers were forced to draw their Tasers and 'red dot' the man to stop him throwing himself into the freezing cold water, which they say could have been 'life threatening'.

The drama unfolded on Tuesday night after officers stopped a Volkswagen Polo on Stamford Street in Stalybridge.

Before police could speak to the driver, the car was driven off.

It was chased around Stalybridge town centre and a nearby industrial estate before being dumped on Bayley Street.

Officers ran after the driver who was seen climbing over the wall of a canal bridge.

It is understood the man then threatened to jump into the water to get away, but after being 'red dotted' by police he climbed back up where he was detained.

The Tasers were not used.

Sgt Luke Summerfield said a 32-year-old was arrested near to High Street just before 8pm on suspicion of failing to stop for police, driving whilst unfit through drink or drugs and theft of motorvehicle.

The car was recovered by police and the man has been released under investigation.
