Man threatens to ignite gas main forcing police to evacuate Bolton residents

Residents were evacuated from their homes after a man threatened to set a gas main alight.

A 26-year-old man has been arrested and taken to hospital after he made the threats at Brookdale Close in Astley Bridge, police have confirmed.

The man was wanted on warrant by police.

Police and fire crews were called to the scene at around noon and a large cordon was put in place around the Blackburn Road area.

Shop staff and residents were cleared from the surrounding area as the emergency services carried out investigations.

The cordon was lifted at 2pm and residents were allowed back into their homes.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: "At around 12noon on Wednesday police were called to a report of a concern for the welfare of a man in Bolton .

"A 26-year-old man who was wanted on warrant has been arrested and has been taken to hospital after he threatened to ignite a gas mains at a property Brookdale Close.

"Brookdale Close was closed for several hours during the incident and residents were advised to leave the area."
