Man threatens driver with axe in Aldi car park during zebra crossing row

A man threatened a driver with axe in an Aldi car park during a zebra crossing row.

Jamie Calvert, 36, wielded the silver-handled axe after witnessing a car speeding over a zebra crossing outside the supermarket May 17 last year.

Calvert became angry and shouted at the driver in the car: “Do that again and I will knock your nose off", Hull Crown Court heard.

Prosecutor Stephen Welch told the court: "The defendant was then seen by members of staff and shoppers go to his car and pick out a silver axe.

“He ran over to the car which had entered the Aldi car park and raised it, threatening the driver with it. The complainant then drove away after being left scared and frightened at what he saw."

Calvert, from, Orchard Park, Hull, was seen by eyewitnesses with the axe and was later charged with possessing a bladed article.

He pleaded guilty to the offence at an earlier court hearing on December 2, 2019.

The court heard the defendant was now in a stable relationship and kept out of trouble since the offence, which took place in the store car park in Pocklington, on May 17 last year.

Paul Genney, defending, criticised the length of time the case had come to the courts during the sentencing hearing on Monday.

He said: “This defendant has had this case over his head for some time and was interviewed regarding the incident almost a month after it had taken place.

“He pleaded guilty on the first occasion and has kept out of trouble since the offence.

"He says there was more to it than just the exchange and the driver said something else to him, but he knows that he shouldn't have acted in the way he did."

The court heard Calvert was suffering with mental health problems after grieving for his cousin who died in a "well-publicised car accident".

Recorder of Hull Judge Paul Watson QC handed down a six-month jail term, suspended for 12 months.

Judge Watson told him: “Your reaction was grossly disproportionate to his when you ran over to him with a silver axe.

"I am not surprised he was frightened and drove off. Nobody was hurt at least. Had they been, the case would be quite different and the sentence would be quite different.

"The thing that stops my sentence from being one of immediate custody is that this took place in May. Eight months have now passed and you have stayed out of trouble."

As part of the sentence, Calvert has to undergo 10 rehabilitation sessions and 140 hours unpaid work as part of a community order.
