Man threatening to jump from M62 bridge is talked down by lorry driver

A heroic lorry driver helped to talk a man down from a bridge over the M62 after he said he was going to jump.

The man climbed over the railings of the bridge on Coney Lane, between junction 5 and 6 of the motorway on May 20.

Phillip Cameron, 59, from Huyton, said he thought the man was waving at him from the bridge at first, because people have been waving to HGV drivers during lockdown.

But when he saw the man's legs at the other side of the railings, he came off at the next junction and went up on the bridge to help him.

The 59-year-old said another man was already there when he arrived and he described it as a "team effort" to get the man back to safety, with the help of police officers.

Phillip contacted the ECHO in the hope of finding out how the man is doing since the incident.

He said: "I just want to know if he's okay.

"I went to Edge Lane police station on the Monday and they said they would try to get some information but I haven't heard anything.

"I don't want to know any details, just if he's okay."

Speaking of what happened, Phillip said: "I'm a HGV driver and in these times people are waving at us on bridges.

"As I was driving past I saw these legs and thought hang on a minute he's not waving at me.

"I came off at the next junction and went up on the bridge.

"Another man got there before me and was talking to him. He told me that the man had said if he got any nearer he would jump so we kept our distance.

"Then the police came on the bridge and they blocked the motorway off."

Phillip said: "There was an off duty police officer standing under the bridge talking to him, so I went down and spoke to him.

"He said the man had two daughters and he wanted to see them."

Phillip added: "We were asking the man what the problem was and he said he wasn't happy. He said he had money but he wasn't happy.

"You can't change how people feel but he started talking about his daughters so he wasn't just thinking about himself then, he was thinking about his family too.

"I think that's what changed his thinking and he realised there's no point jumping.

"It was a bit of a shock, I've never seen someone on the bridge before.

"It was a team effort. If no one took any interest I think he would have jumped. He wanted someone to talk to."

A spokesperson from Merseyside Police said: "We were called at 3.40pm on 20 May to a report of concern for the safety of man on Coney Lane bridge between junction 5 and 6 of the M62.

"Officers attended and the man was detained under the Mental Health Act, and taken to hospital for assessment."
