Man threatened with knife by gang who stole his expensive watch on Canal Street

A man was threatened with a knife and robbed of his watch in the Gay Village.

The 23-year-old victim was threatened by a gang on Canal Street at around 7am this morning (Sunday).

The offenders claimed to be armed with a knife and ran off with the young man's watch and wallet.

Police describe the watch as 'high value' and said it had been a gift to the victim on his 21st birthday.

A concerned member of the public flagged down police officers on patrol and alerted them to the robbery.

Officers found one of the suspects and retrieved some of the stolen property.

A 27-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of robbery. He remains in custody for questioning.

Sgt Trevor Eaton, of GMP’s City of Manchester division, said: “Firstly, I’d like to thank the diligent member of the public who alerted officers in the first instance.

“I would also like to commend the officers who responded to this incident so professionally. Their swift action means that a suspect was in custody soon after the initial report came into us, which I hope sends a clear message that we will not tolerate such offending in our city.

“Whilst we have made arrest, I want to be clear that we are still appealing for any witnesses who could assist our enquiries. Do you have any information that could help us? If so, please get in touch with police as soon as possible.”

Police are asking anyone with information to contact police on 101, quoting incident number 738 of 01/09/19. Reports can also be made anonymously via the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
