Man threatened to stab a police officer after being caught on mini-motorcycle in Victoria Bus Station

A man who had a knife threatened to stab a police officer after being caught on a mini-motorcycle in Victoria Bus Station, a court heard.

The vehicle, carrying two riders without helmets, was being driven in and out of the station at around 10-15mph just after midnight on February 7.

One officer in a police car got out and ran after one passenger, Jerome Thompson, and pulled him off the bike and detained him.

Nottingham Crown Court heard he was abusive and swearing and put his hand in his jacket and said, "I'm going to stab you".

"In the police van he made threats to kill his brother and, when he got out, he would kill a police officer and a judge as well," said Alan Murphy, prosecuting.

"The officer was plainly frightened at what the defendant said to him when he produced the knife, and described it as the worst incident he has encountered as a police officer."

Thompson pleaded guilty before magistrates to having an offensive weapon, no protective headgear on the motorcycle, using threatening words and possessing cannabis, after a small amount of the drug was found on him at a police station.

Despite being bailed with a condition of residence and a tagged curfew, within 24 hours Thompson phoned police and repeatedly said he was "going to go out and stab people".

Police went to a flat in Burns Street, Radford, where 22-year-old Thompson, of no fixed address, was inside with two kitchen knives in his hands.

He pleaded guilty to an additional charge of making a threat to kill, receiving a total sentence of 15 months in prison, suspended for two years, and a community order for his offending.

He will have to complete 20 rehabilitation activity days, with Judge Stuart Rafferty QC saying: "I hope probation can find you proper accommodation and the help that you need".

Thompson, who has self-harmed in custody, is now seeing a mental health worker, going to visit a psychiatrist and is on medication.

The judge said: "I'm certain you were in an aggravated phase; a bad phase of the mental health difficulties you have. You were hearing those voices telling you what to do and what not to do."
