Man threatened by gang of youths as they surrounded him on walk during coronavirus pandemic

A man has been left too "scared" to go for a walk after being surrounded by a gang of youths.

The 50-year-old man, who did not want to be named, had gone for a walk near Llanelli Wetland Centre at around 2pm on Sunday when he was confronted by around six youths.

Gatherings of more than two people in parks and public spaces have been banned by the government during the coronavirus pandemic. People are only allowed to go out for exercise once a day and must be by themselves or with members of their household.

The man said the gang was made up of around six youths who surrounded him "like a pack of wolves" and threatened him with abusive language.

The man was walking as part of his daily exercise in his local area which is allowed during the coronavirus pandemic in advice set out by the UK Government.

"I was on my own and I'd taken my time out for a walk that we're allowed," he said.

"I was walking near Bynea and it was quiet down there. I'd seen one or two cyclists but didn't really come across anyone else.

"I was walking towards the Wetlands and then was going to walk back.

"I'd got about halfway and I noticed there was a group of teenagers and they had about four dogs with them.

"They all had big sticks and were swinging them around.

"I gave them a wide berth and was going to walk past them but immediately they started saying stuff to me.

"They started poking their sticks at me and waving them in my face."

He said that aas he tried to get away from the teenagers they began shouting abusive language towards him.

He said: "There was no-one there, I was completely on my own.

"They were around me like wolves and I couldn't get around them.

"Then they started chasing me. I was getting quite scared at that point.

"I managed to get away but I thought I was going to be physically harmed. I thought they were going to kill me."

The man was able to get far enough away to call the police who arrived at the scene and escorted him home.

He said he had felt "intimidated" and no longer wants to walk in the area.

Dyfed-Powys Police said it received a report that a man, who was walking with his dog along the Llanelli Coastal path on Sunday afternoon, was confronted by a group of youths.

A spokeswoman said: "The man was not injured. Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to contact Dyfed-Powys Police, either online at: http://bit.ly/DPPReportOnline, by email at: contactcentre@dyfed-powys.pnn.police.uk, or by calling 101."
