Man thought he'd slept through tsunami after 35ft boat appeared outside office

A businessman joked he thought he'd slept through a tsunami after a 35ft boat appeared outside his workplace.

Phillip Tye drove into work on Monday as usual but nothing could have prepared him for his unusual fly-tipping discovery.

Sofas, fridge freezers, and bags of rubbish are items often found dumped by councils.

But what Philip saw was a 35ft boat parked on a verge of grass at Skippers Lane Industrial Estate, Teesside Live reports.

Despite being over six miles from the coast, the large boat was found washed up on the Middlesbrough industrial estate, leaving both Phil and Redcar and Cleveland Council "bemused."

Phil, operations director at ERW Joinery Ltd, said: "When pulling up to open the factory this morning, I came across this mad item of fly-tipping.

"Unfortunately, the estate is a regular fly-tipping spot for builders' waste, black bags, and general rubbish.

"My mind was blown seeing a 35ft boat sitting on the estate this morning, all of our employees think it's amazing a boat can be tipped, and yet no one has seen it.

"I suggested we may have all slept through a tsunami and it was never fly-tipped after all.

"As it stands the boat is still there, I’m sure a crane will be required to move it. I reported it to Redcar and Cleveland Council who were as bemused as we were by today's find."

Redcar and Cleveland Council posted an update on social media, saying: "We know we had a lot of rain yesterday, but we didn't expect a boat to wash up on Skippers Lane! Our teams were alerted to this fly-tipped boat earlier today and we are in the process of getting it removed.

"We will be doing everything we can to find out who fly-tipped the boat and take all possible action against them. If you spot fly-tipping anywhere in the borough you can report it by calling 01642 774774 or online here."
