Man tells of "weird experience" as delivery man keeps walking into his home unannounced

An Irishman took to social media to ask if people thought it was weird that a local delivery man walks into his house without knocking.

In the short post, he said he was in the kitchen when he heard his patio door open, and joked that he thought his wife had done a lap of the house, only to look over and see a parcel on his table.

He explained: “I was just in my kitchen making a cheese toastie, when the patio door opened.

“Me thinking that the missus had somehow gone out the back and ran around the house (in the rain) and came in the side door, I didn't really react instantly.

“When I did look up, I saw that someone had left a parcel on the table.”

In an attempt to find out what had happened he said he “ran to the door and saw a van (a leading courier company's van) pull out of the drive.

“I know the driver to see and I know for a fact that he knows that our front porch is always left unlocked for parcel drop-offs.”

He went on to say that “this is the second time he has come into the house through the side door to drop off stuff.

“It's not even as if the side door is quicker to get to.

“In fairness he leaves it just inside the door so he doesn't even have to really step in, but he didn't even knock.”

He then asked, “am I wrong in thinking that this is unacceptable?”

People were quick to respond in defence of the driver, with one writing: “I've had delivery drivers drop packages somewhere safe. If it annoys you, say it to the driver.

“They're not doing it maliciously and are probably trying to be helpful.”

Another person, who identified himself as a postman said: “Postman here - if he’s just leaving it in the door and he knows the porch is open it’s because he doesn’t want it getting robbed from the porch after he leaves, because it’s open.

“Parcels do get robbed often unfortunately and it is known that some vans like Amazon have been followed on their rounds and people steal the delivered parcel from the porch or even a bin.

“If you’d rather him leave it in the porch, put a note on the window saying so. He’ll see it and do so most likely.”

A third wrote: “Local delivery fellas do the same here.

“Come to the backdoor even though they’re opening gates. I offered him tea once being polite and he said ‘aye go on’, lovely fella but last time I did it.”
