Man tasered at city train station was 'obstructing the railway', say police

A man tasered by police at a city train station was arrested for obstructing the railway, police have confirmed.

Footage emerged last weekend of two officers confronting the man on an out of bounds section of the platform at Sandhills.

The bare-chested man was seen flinging his arms in the air on Saturday, and yelling at officers: "I'm waiting, I'm waiting!"

Witnesses who gathered to watch the incident in Kirkdale told him: "Chill lad, relax lad."

The footage then showed the Taser, which temporarily disables a person through an electrical current, being discharged.

The officer shouted: "Taser, taser, taser!"

The man was struck and immediately fell to the ground to gasps from the watching crowd.

Today, British Transport Police confirmed the man was arrested on suspicion of a public order offence and obstructing the railway.

Checks later confirmed there were no mental health concerns in relation to the man.

In a statement, the British Transport Police said: "Officers were called to Sandhills station at 3pm on 24 April following reports of a man on the tracks.

"The man became aggressive towards officers and a taser was discharged.

"He was arrested on suspicion of a public order offence and obstructing the railway.

"Due to his demeanour, he was taken to hospital for a mental health assessment.

"Following an assessment, he was deemed fit and released.

"Enquiries into the offences continue."

After the incident, Merseyrail said to its customers: "Due to an earlier trespass incident in the Sandhills area, the 1520 Liverpool Central to Ormskirk service will terminate at Maghull.

"The 1608 Ormskirk to Liverpool service will be started at Maghull."
