Man tasered after threatening immigration centre staff with baseball bat and knife

A man who smashed up an immigration reporting centre with a baseball bat had to be restrained by armed police.

The 32-year-old was detained following reports of 'a disturbance' at the centre in Loughborough just after 9am this morning.

LeicestershireLive reports armed police arrived at the scene, to find the man armed with a bat and a knife causing damage to the inside of the premises, on the corner of Woodgate and South Street.

People travel from across Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire and Derbyshire to the centre in order to report, or to make further submissions.

The centre is believed to be used by up to 250 people a day.

It also provides people who are reporting, with the opportunity to raise any concerns they may have.

An eyewitness said both windows on the front were smashed as were five others along with two panes on an internal reception door, while a police car was also damaged.

One police officer suffered a hand injury in the incident.

A spokesperson for Leicestershire Police said: “Local officers arrived at the scene within minutes and apprehended a suspect, after a taser was discharged at him.

"In the interests of officer and public safety an armed response team also deployed to the incident."

The spokesperson added: “As well as significant damage to the premises a police car was damaged and one officer sustained a minor injury to his hand.

"No one else was injured.

"The arrested man remains in police custody.”

The Home Office centre is part of an operation which requires people who are waiting for a decision on their asylum application, and those whose claims have been refused, to report at specified reporting centres.
