Man tasered after dramatic knifepoint stand off with police in Bridgend

A man was tasered by armed police after reports that he had a knife in Bridgend .

On Thursday, there was a heavy police presence at Pil-y-Cynffig in North Cornelly.

A photo shows a police van and three police vehicles at the scene.

Police have confirmed that armed officers were called following concerns for the 22-year-old's safety and the general public.

A spokeswoman for South Wales Police said: "Officers attended to Pil-y-Cynffig, North Cornelly, yesterday, Sep 5, shortly after 11.30am, following a report of a man with a knife.

"Armed officers were deployed as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of divisional officers and the public in the area.

"With serious concerns for the man’s safety and that of the general public, a decision was made to discharge Taser in order to subdue the 22-year-old.

"The man was subsequently detained under the Mental Health Act and taken to hospital for assessment."
