Man taken to major trauma unit after car crashes into tree in Seaham

A man has been taken to hospital after becoming trapped following a collision in Seaham.

Emergency services were called to the scene shortly after 5pm on Friday after reports that a car had crashed into a tree near to the sea front.

A nurse passing the scene stopped to assist before paramedics arrived at the B1287 near to Seaham Hall Hotel.

Crews from Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service had to free the man who had become trapped in the vehicle.

The man was taken to James Cook University Hospital but the extent of his injuries is not known.

A spokesman for Durham Constabulary could not provide any further details at this time.

A spokesperson for the North East Ambulance Service said: "We received a call at 5.09pm for a car involved in a collision with a tree.

"A nurse was passing by the scene and started assistance until an ambulance and Hazardous Area Response Team crew arrived a few minutes later.

"We requested support from fire service to help free the patient who was trapped in the car and took them to the major trauma unit at James Cook Hospital."
