Man taken to hospital with serious injuries after M56 crash which caused long rush-hour delays

A man is seriously injured in hospital after a crash on the M56 earlier this morning.

Three cars were involved in a smash on the westbound stretch of the motorway between junctions three and four at around 6am.

Paramedics and fire crews attended alongside police and the motorway was closed completely for a time between the Sharston Interchange and Simonsway.

A 38 year-old man was seriously injured in the incident Greater Manchester Police have now confirmed.

In a statement the force said said: "Police were called at around 6am today, Monday 24 February, to reports of a collision involving three cars on the M56 between junction two and three.

"A 38-year-old man has been taken to hospital with serious injuries where he remains in a stable condition.

"No arrests have been made and enquiries are ongoing."

There was damage caused to the central reservation and two out of four lanes are still closed in both directions whilst repairs are being carried out police added.

During rush hour delays stretched back several miles onto Princess Parkway and Princess Road in south Manchester with drivers saying they had been stuck in the jams for over an hour.

Transport for Greater Manchester advised people to try and find other routes if heading south of the city centre.
