Man taken to hospital with serious injuries after falling from bridge over A1 in Gateshead

A man has been taken to hospital after falling from a bridge over the A1 in Gateshead.

Police say the man has suffered serious but not life-threatening injuries and has been taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary for treatment.

Emergency services were called to the scene at the Birtley turn off at 2am on Tuesday morning.

Officers were forced to close the A1 southbound at Coalhouse roundabout and northbound at Eighton Lodge and set up a diversion.

Rush hour motorists were faced with long delays as specialist officers continued to deal with the incident.

At around 12.10pm, the man fell from the bridge and paramedics took him to hospital.

The road was then fully reopened.

A spokesperson for Northumbria Police said: "Shortly after 2am today (Tuesday), police received a report of a concern for a man on a bridge over the A1 near the Birtley turn off.

"Specialist officers attended the scene and due to safety concerns, temporarily closed a section of the A1 between Coalhouse roundabout and Eighton Lodge.

"Shortly after 12.10pm, the man fell from the bridge and has been taken to hospital by ambulance with injuries believed to be serious but non-life-threatening.

"The A1 has now fully reopened and the diversions removed."

A spokeswoman for the North East Ambulance Service added: "We were called at 2.27am to a male patient at height on the A1 near St Andrew's Church at Lamesley.

"We dispatched 10 resources to the scene and the male patient was transported to the RVI at around 1pm."
