Man taken to hospital with serious injuries after falling from bridge on M61

A lane has been closed on the M61 after a man fell from a bridge

Emergency services were scrambled to the southbound carriageway of the motorway near junction 5 (Westhoughton) at around 2pm.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) and North West Motorway Police officers all attended, along with the ambulance service.

A GMP spokesman said: At around 2pm today, police were called to reports that a man had fallen from a bridge on the M61 by junction 5 in Bolton.

"Emergency services attended and a number of roads were closed.

"A man has been taken to hospital with serious injuries.

"Road closures will shortly be lifted."

Highways England advised people to avoid the area and find an alternative route.

A lane remains closed on the southbound carriageway.

Normal traffic flow is not expected to return until around 4.30pm.
