Man taken to hospital with 'serious' injuries after being hit by car in Newport which then reversed over him

A man has been taken to hospital with "serious" injuries after being hit by a car which then reversed over him in Newport.

Gwent Police were called to the incident on Monday, April 20, involving a black BMW 3 Series and a pedestrian.

The incident happened at the junction between Harrow Road and Chepstow Road, with police saying the vehicle then left the scene.

A police statement said: "We received a report of a road traffic collision between a car and a pedestrian in Harrow Road, Newport at around 2.55pm on Monday, April 20.

"The collision involved a black BMW 3 Series and a man, who has sustained serious injuries, close to the junction with Chepstow Road.

"The driver of the vehicle reportedly collided with the man, before reversing over the pedestrian and then driving away.

"Chepstow Road is currently closed between Harrow Road and Esso petrol station, and paramedics from the Welsh Ambulance Service are attending."

A police spokesperson said a 46-year-old man was taken to hospital.

On Tuesday, April 21, Gwent Police said a 65-year-old man from Newport had been arrested on suspicion of careless driving, failure to stop and failure to report. He has been released under investigation.

The man who was taken to hospital has since been released.

Officers have been appealing for witnesses and any individuals who may have CCTV or dashcam footage to contact them by calling 101, quoting log reference 250 20/04/20 or 2000134445.
