Man taken to hospital with serious head injury after incident in Tredegar

A 21-year-old man was taken to hospital in the early hours of this morning with a serious head injury after an incident in the centre of Tredegar.

Two arrests have been made following the incident on Castle Street at around 12.55am Friday morning.

The young man was taken to the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff. His condition remains unknown.

Police were called at approximately 12.55 am following reports of a disorder in the area. A police investigation has been launched and officers are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

A 22-year-old man from the Tredegar area was arrested at the scene on suspicion of grievous bodily harm.

A second arrest was made later. A 28-year-old man, also from the Tredegar area, was arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm.

What happens during a criminal investigation?

Both men remain in police custody.

Local people reported that there was a heavy police presence in the area at around 1am, with forensics at the scene later.

The road around Castle Street and the town's clock was closed to motorists this morning as police continued their investigations.

The road has now reopened.

Detective Inspector Leigh Holborn said: “An investigation is now underway and we currently have officers in the area carrying out a number of lines of enquiry and providing reassurance to the local community.

“I would ask anyone who may have witnessed the incident or may have filmed or taken images on their mobile devices, to please get in touch as they may be able to help us with our enquiries and help us build a picture of what has happened."

Police are also urging any motorists who used the road around this time to check any dash cam footage that they may have that could provide them with further information.
